A Chocolate sundae is considered an ice-cream dessert that includes 1-2 scoops of chilled ice cream which is topped with a syrup sauce. While its other toppings may include a peanut, sprinkles, whipped cream, marshmallows, or other fruits like a pineapple.
History
In many stories about the invention of the sundae, the popular ice cream soda was said to have been one of the inspirations. It was prohibited in Illinois for soda to be sold on Sundays due to their considered as being too frilly, according to an account published by the Evanston Public Library (Illinois). Most of the origin stories for the sundae focus on the novelty or inventiveness of the treatment or on the name of the creator while ignoring legal constraints. A popular weekend dessert at the beginning of the century, the ice cream sundae quickly became the semi-official soda fountain treat of the weekend.
