A Mint Julep is a traditional drink of the Kentucky Derby, which is why it is so popular. There are tens of thousands of Mint Juleps served at Churchill Downs in Louisville, and millions more are consumed by fans watching the race across the nation. A Mint Julep is a delicious drink all year round due to the balanced combination of sweet, smoky, and herbal flavors. In addition to the bourbon, sugar, and mint, this cocktail also needs crushed ice for a perfect mixing effect.
Other forms of ice won’t do the trick, so take the time to create an excellent pile of crushed ice before mixing it up. The traditional way to serve mint juleps is in silver or pewter cups held by the handles or rim to maintain the optimum frost. This can, however, simply be done in a tall glass filled with ice water.
Tips
- Make sure your mint is well mixed. It is not the intent to tear the leaves into pieces, but to release the essential oils. You should be careful to stir the drink gently until it reaches a frosty state once it is built.
- For the simple fact that bourbon is the only liquid in the Julep, you should always choose a more expensive brand.
- It is a good idea to gently slap the mint sprig before garnishing it with it in order to release the oils.
- If you would rather not muddle the mint and sugar, you would be better off infusing it with simple syrup.
