Around the turn of the 20th century, Mamie Taylor achieved fame as an opera singer. In 1899, an old legend says a bartender in Rochester, New York created this scotch and ginger ale drink at her request. A tall cooler was given her name and enjoyed great popularity for a few years, then it went out of fashion for a few years, and then came back again after a renewed A Mamie Taylor cocktail, like a Scotch highball, is a great drink nonetheless. The blended whisky can be used instead of the single malt, and the single malt can then be used by itself. As the lime slices through the ginger beer, it cuts through the sweetness.
It is similar to the Moscow mule, which uses vodka as well as lime juice and ginger beer as ingredients. However, the smokey flavour of scotch adds an extra dimension to this cocktail. Freshly squeezed lime juice is the preferred ingredient for most cocktails. To get more juice from your lime, warm it and then compress it hard into the countertop and roll it for a few seconds before cutting it and squeezing it. The ginger ale or ginger beer in the drink should be either ginger ale or ginger ale. Depending on how spicy you like ginger, you may choose to use one or the other.
